Nail It: Diamonds and Pearls

This is one of my favorite and easiest nail designs, all itrequires is nail polish and pearls. The fact that it’s kind of eye catching,yet muted is the perfect gateway someone who is trying it nail art first time.

Steps:

1. Apply base coat

2. Apply 1 coat of a nude polish ( I used PettyBeige by OCC) allow to dry

3. Apply two coats of a clear hologram polish ( Iused the newest Lacquery color GirlBand), do not dry completely

4. Using a dotting tool/orange stick and dip itinto a small amount of clear polish then touch the top of a pearl ( can be purchased at Michael’s) and place it on your nail, and repeat.

Lacquery is a wonderful newbrand of nail polish created by drum roll please.... me! I am excited that mycrazy obsession for nail art, and my rather large collection of polishesinspired me to do something more. I intend to keep this a small, boutique style operation, and I eventually hope to collaborate with Bay Area boutiques on custom colors, as well as custom colors for all. I hope that you’ll support this fun adventureas well.

The line started last week with just 4 colors, The Kid (Jelly purple with Lavender Glitter), Flocked (A Glitter Infused Opaque White), All of theLights (A clear Glow in the Dark topper), and Onyx ( A black glitter topper) with a newest arrival today Fairyland, but I havemore colors coming soon.

Two coats of Flocked with some nail art of course.

The colors are glitter focused, but I will make sure that I include some nonglitter colors and large bottle sizes in the near future. I tried to find a base for the polish that wasnot to thin, that you had to apply to many coats, and not to thick where it impactedthe finish. All you need is one coat for a sheer look (or to wear over one ofyour other favorite colors), or two coats to get a more opaque look.

Nailed It: Drinks on Me!

I was on a great site called Swatch and Learn and I stumbled upon a great New Years Eve themed martini look. The look on her site was done with a glitter base which was fitting for that particular night but I decided to go a different direction.

I've had this new red sitting around for about a month and thought it would be the perfect canvas for my martini glasses. I also thought the design would be perfect for me since, dirty martinis are my second favorite drink. This look, appears much more complicated than it really is all you need is nail art polish which you can get from any drug store, green polish, and a toothpick ( if you don't have a dotting tool). If you need more than direction that what's on Swatch and Learn I've done a video tutorial to help you out.

DIAMONDS Together Bag

As usual I'm window shopping online, when I visit one of my favorite sites Need Supply and I stumble upon the cutest, and cheekiest bag I've seen in a while. It was a white canvas tote with a Chanel-esque bag painted on it and I immediately googled the brand Thursday Friday to find that there were other bags with designer inspiration. Full disclosure, I'm not a designer bag girl I much prefer to spend my money on several things than one (over priced) item, I just don't see them as practical. But the Thursday Friday, Together, Super Together, and Mini Together are affordable, much more functional, and lets face it fun! The brand also boast a line of neoprene bags that are extremely cute as well. Of course a brand like this is powered by two smart and creative women, Creative pop music, and fashion magazine publication. The price point of the line is also very reasonable with bags ranging from $30-$65, which makes the fun, chic, practical "It-Bag" a great post holiday gift for yourself. It's definitely the gift that I'll be getting myself, the only question is what color?! HAPPY SHOPPING!

I don’t subscribe to Wyet, but one of my best friends gave me the January 2012 issue and I notonly love the content of the magazine but the cover. I’ve always liked thecover girl Carey Mulligan she’s been excellent in all the movies I’ve seen herin. Carey’s one of those people you see and think great actress, she’ll be anaward winner soon. What you don’t think is sex symbol, but with this W magazine cover the tides may beshifting. While she is in a bra, there is something innocent, and not overtlysexy about it which still allows those who admire Carey for her acting to stilltake her seriously. By no means did this shot make her look like a “sell out”to the sex crazed, Hollywood, “It Girl” phenomenon, it just showed some of usthat she is more than just an actress, that she is also a pretty face and thereisn’t anything wrong with that. Let usnot forget how amazing the hair and make up is (pure beauty shot), and whoevergot a hold of those eyebrows is a genius!

If you haven’t seen any of the Carey’s work I highly suggest2010’s “Never Let Me Go”.

Beauty Quickie: e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliner

THE VERDICT:
This eyeliner can stand toe to toe with its department store counter parts. Theformula is deeply pigmented, and applies smoothly. If you like this particulartype of formula of eyeliner then this may be one of the best and economicaloptions. The Slanted Eye Brush thatcomes with is good only if you are in a pinch, it’s best to invest in a betterbrush with a longer handle and better bristles.

Overall Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars (Excellent)and 1 out of 5 (Awful) for the brush

Nailed It: Almost For Audrey

Please forgive me I forgot to clean up around my nails.

This particular art was inspired by many YouTube post using the China Glaze color "For Audrey", while I didn't have that color on hand I did have one that was very similar from Sinful Colors called "Mint Apple" and thought I'd give it a try. This look was also kind of blast from the past, it reminds like of old school nail art that all the ladies with really long acrylics use to get in the early 90's.

The look itself was easy to achieve, and was done all free hand.

Tools Needed:

Basecoat/TopCoat
2 Nail Polish Colors of your choice
Dotting Tool ( or toothpick)

After applying my base coat the first thing I did using the nail polish brush is make a thick diagonal line (1/3 away from the cutical) to the tip. I think went to the other side of my nails and did the same thing (sorry not pictured). This makes the inverted chevron look.

I then placed a small amount of black nail polish on a piece of paper ( you can use a paper plate or anything you don't mind getting nail polish on), and dipped my dotting tool ( you can use a tooth pick) in it and made 3 dots along the first side of the inverted chevron. I allowed to dry and then I placed on a top coat.

Unfortunately I didn't do a video tutorial of this particular look ( if you would like me to let me know), but I did do a tutorial on how to create leopard spots which you may like. Check it out......

Beauty Find of the Week: Nicole Drying Drops

As many of my loyal readers can see I've gotten a new obsession, Nail Art. With that comes patience and that is something I truly need to work on, and has caused me a lot of time in correcting mistakes, and smuges just because I didn't wait those 10 extra minutes. I think I may have found a quick fix Nicole by OPI Drying Drops, I'm telling you these little drops are a gift from the angels. Before you read on know this stuff is pricey as hell, but even if you aren't doing nail art and just basic polish it's a serious time save and we all know time IS money! The drops themselve are a blend which used Jojoba Oil, and vitamin E which not only speeds up dry time but is excellent for your cuticles.
The 0.5fl oz bottle comes with a small dropper which allows you to get drop the perfect amount on your nails, and don't let the small amount fool you, you only need a small amount for each nail so it last a while. All you have to do is wait 1 minute after you've polished and drop the liquid right onto you nails and 5 minutes later you'll have dry nails! The product is carried at all the local suspects (Sally's, Ulta), but can be most widely found at Target!

I'm all about simplicity, and fun when it comes to style. I feel you can exude confidence which be default is sexy with very little effort. Very few women embody sexy/confidence like Sophia Vegara which is why it's so great that she's managed to translate that into a new clothing line. It's far less Va Va Va Voom than her red carpet wears, but beautiful and fun just the same. The line is a collection of clothing, shoes, and jewlery so you can mix and match pieces from every aspect of the collection. My favorite looks from her line are of course the most simple which to me equal timelessness. I love how some of the tops have draping in all the right places, and are cut around the neckline which tends to compliment most women. I also love that there are pieces in the collection that can be layered, there is nothing wrong with mixing and matching some the wonderful pieces in this line with some of your pricey items.

Nailed It: Purple Eclipse

Let me first thank the Karen, from Make Up and Beauty Blog for even giving me the tools I needed to do this half moon design. I reading Karen's blog as I frequently do, and she had a very rare nail art post which the easiest most simple way to create a take on the french manicure. Well I decided to flip her idea around and finally achieve the half moon look that I'd been seeing in magazines for over a year now. This is by far the most simple nail design I've seen in a while.

Here's how to get the look:

Apply your base coat as normal and allow to dry

Apply one coat of a polish of your choice

Choose two polishes, and apply one coat of one to your entire nail and allow to dry. This is a very important step your nail polish must be completely dry. You may even want to do this the night before

Place reinforcement labels ( you can get these anywhere Target, Walmart, Officemax, Staples etc) near the cuticle of your nails, the lower the placement the smaller your half moon. If it is up too high it will look like a french manicure.
Apply the second color above the reinforcement label (sorry I didn't get a picture of this), it's okay if you get nail polish on the label itself. Depending on how dark the color is you can use one of two coats
Allow second color to dry and finish with top coat

This is definitely a look you should try, I went in to get a Pedicure and the manicurist said "oh wow you nails are really cute, where did you get that done" when I told her I did them myself she immediately said "are you a manicurist too" I said no, but I guess I'm on my way to being an unofficial one.

Splurge vs. Steal: Sears

I have never kept it a secret from my readers or anyone else that I am a bargain fashionista. Let's face it there are few things more exciting that finding a chic, fashionable, fun, quality clothing at a discounted price. I'm shocked to think all those years ago when my grandparents use to take me on almost weekly trips to Sears that I would once again find my way back to that store again. This time I wasn't shopping in the boys department for pants that would fit my long legs ( boy do I wish my legs were still that long), I now get to shop great fashion minded diffusion lines like UK Style by French Connection, Apostrophe, and the stores newest line Kardashian Kollection. One item that is very popular this season, and is also a timeless look is the cape, and there are many to choose from, but most are extremely pricey so with the help of Sears I'll show you how to get the look for less.

Hint: One is from Sear's UK Style by French Connection ($63.99), the other is carried at a top department store and popular online boutique ($435).

Nailed It: Bubble Gums

Well I’m back with another nail art post; I have to admitfrom the start that I’m not fully happy with my second try and ombre(gradation) nails. In the future I’ll be sticking to the full sponge techniquein my PurpleRain II post. This technique also took a little more time; as the basecolor had to fully dry before moving to the sponge technique.

Here’s how I achieved the look:

Step 1-

Select 4 colors in the same color range ( from light to dark)

Step 2-

Apply base coat (allow to dry), and apply the lightest shade to the entire nail. Depending on how opaque the color is you may want to apply two coats, and allow to dry completely.

Step 3-

Apply the darkest shade to just the tip of the finger nail, like a french manicure. Don't worry it does not have to be perfect as this color will be covered by the sponge technique.

If this was done a little neater it would've been a cute stand alone look.

Step 4 -

Using the sponge technique described in my previous post apply the second to the lightest color starting from 1/3 from the cuticle area ( allow for a short drying time), then the second darkest color starting from the half way point of the middle of the nail, and finally use the darkest color from step three and sponge on to the tip. Allow to dry fully and apply a topcoat.

While the process wasn't hard, I didn't really love the finished look. Although I think with practice it could look much better.

This adorable wool blend shag number is on the top of my list of must haves. The Silence and Noise Shag Cardigan is actually one of many carpet style jackets I'm in love with this season. It's in line with many of the mod trends that are cropping up from everywhere. However the comfort of this cardigan is more than just a trend, who doesn't love being wrapped in plush fabrics during the colder months? The 4-button Urban Outfitters exclusive is about 26 inches long from shoulder to hem and made of wool, nylon, and acrylic. I do have to be honest, I feel like $99 dollars is a little pricey as I've seen actual shag jackets for that same price. I'm definitely going to get this, I'm just going to make sure it's on sale first. HAPPY SHOPPING!

Nailed It: Purple Rain Part II

These nail post of mine are few and far between, I'm hoping to change that now that I've decided to do my own manicures. I've found that since I've started doing my own nails they are so much stronger, and grow really fast. I'm not sure what they do in some of the nail shops when you are only getting (all natural) manicures that damage your nails so much. I've also stop the Gels and Shellac because they do weaken my nails, but I miss them so much mostly because of the nail art aspect. I've been in search of fun things to do other than buying really great polishes when I stumbled on ombre nails, or as my former nail artist Keina called them gradation.

Finished Purple Rain Part II look

I was inspired by one of Keina's first designs she did for me which I called Purple Rain. Once I found a great tutorial on how to, I ran with it. I'm still working on blending the middle color even better (think adding a 4th color would help), but for my first time I don't think I did bad at all. If you'd like to try it follow these directions:

All of these colors were under 2 dollars

What you'll need:

3 Nail Polishes from the same color range one light, medium, and dark ( you can use more than 3 colors as well)
Base and top coat ( use the ones you're most comfortable with)
Make Up Sponge ( cut into 3 pieces, one piece for each color)
Plastic Plate

What to Do:

Apply Base coat
Cut up the makeup sponge into three pieces
Place a small amount of the lightest color onto a plastic plate ( some tutorials show brushing the color directly on the sponge too) and dip the sponge into the polish
Starting from the base of the nail dab the color all the way to the tip
Repeat step 3 with the medium color
Starting from the half way point of the nail dab the color all the way to the tip
Repeat step 3 with the darkest color
Focusing on the tip of the nail dab the color all along the nail tip
Apply Top coat

I know 9 steps seems like a lot, but it literally took me 15 minutes total to complete both hands. The next time, I'll try this type of look using a slightly modified technique. I'm totally loving it and have already gotten compliments, feel free to ask questions in the comments section, if you want to try this look out and need some more help.

Crux New York, I know you’re asking why a Bay Area centric blog ishighlighting a New York brand. It’s simple there is more to Crux New York (CruxNY) that meetsthe eye; Crux was actually started in 2008 by two Bay Area ladies Sennie Clarkand Ahyiana Angel. As with many great designers and brands CruxNY started offas a hobby, and quickly turned into a wonderful and now very visible brand. The line has a full range or earrings, necklaces, and bracelets some of the pieces have even been worn Beyonce and Solange in the “Party Video” and if that’s notbig I don’t know what is. I had a chance to ask the ladies behind Crux New York moreabout the line and themselves.

What is your background? (Education, hometown)

We both have backgrounds in Marketing and Merchandising and are from the Bay Area.

What is your favorite clothing item this season? Any looks for this season?

Sennie: Definitely a nice pair of leather boots.

Angel: Flowy blouses. I love the mix of edgy and soft.

If you weren't designing what would you be doing?

Although we are designers we also hold positions in the world of merchandising/buying as well as PR so at this point designing is a passion and we are both just trying to live out our dreams!

Does the Bay Area Inspired your designs?

Since we currently live in New York I would not say that the Bay Area inspires our designs on a day-to-day basis but overall yes in terms of our upbringings in the Bay Area helping to shape or style, viewpoints and artistic expression.

What is your favorite kind of accessory?

Sennie: Favorite kind of accessory would be earrings because they are a definite piece that can change any outfit and a simple addition as well.

Angel: I am totally a bracelet type of girl. I love mixing and matching unique pieces...old and new. Sometimes when I wear a vintage piece that has been in my family it makes me feel closer to my family although they are all the way in Cali.

What’s your favorite piece in your current collection?

Angel: I would have to say the Haji earrings that Beyonce wore in her "Party" video. You can dress them up or down and that is always a plus.

Sennie: The Rayna necklace. I really like the way that choker necklaces fit on me, so having the choker look with the elongated strands hanging is a big PLUS for me.

You may be still asking yourself why the name “Crux New York” wellthe ladies put it like this “Crux by definition is sometimes referred to as avital, decisive, or pivotal point as well as the basic , central, or criticalpoint or feature.....” and then the New York represents where the line was born. Vintage Point: Alameda Points Fashion Faire (Part 2)

Amazing Vintage glasses, he's always at the Antiques Fair check him out!

You may remember me informing your of an amazing vintage clothing event call the Alameda Points Vintage Fashion Faire. Well I was lucky enough to attend the first day of the two day event so I can get a prime view, and "first stab" at the vintage treats.

I walked into the venue and was completely amazed, The O Club which is located on the former Alameda Naval base is huge. I was literally engulfed by two ballrooms of vintage clothing, and accessories. It was one of the more amazing, and fun experiences I've had since starting this blog, I even got to met Jillian Knox who is new to the Bay Area but has a fabulous array of vintage finds at her shop Joules Jewels Vintage, as well as Mary Meg, I was just captivated by every single item that she created, I can't wait to bring you more on her.

Surprisingly the treats didn't stop at just the clothing there was a live band as well as cocktails provided by another Bay Area business St. George Spirits.

Don't be sad even if you missed the event, many of the people who were there are also at the Alameda Points Antique Fair, which occurs the first Sunday of every month. So you know what that mean, this Sunday November, 6th make sure you make your way there!

Ah, the wishlist not as impersonal as the gift card, but not as "it's the gift that counts" as not letting anyone know what you want and letting them pick a gift themselves. Fall 2011 Cosmetics Trend Show: butter London (Part 2)

I know I started off the week with butter London, but I can't think of a better way to end it either. After all of the presentations at the Trend Show, one floor of Nordstrom is turned into a beauty and skincare paradise. Various live demos are going on, make up consultations and applications and this year Nonie Creme founder of butter London was there to give some tips about the brand as well as give color consultations. I even had the great honor, of getting my nails polished by here FAINTS!

What you may not know and I found out was that to get the optimal butter London look, like what you may see on some runways you must use butter London's Flawless Basecoat and P.D. Quick Top Coat. Nonie says the lacquers don't play well with others" and often you will find yourself with bubbles, streaking, and premature chipping. I took that advice and purchased the Tops and Tails' kit which feature both the Flawless Basecoat and P.D Quick Top Coat. But before I had a chance to purchase Nonie herself polished my nails, using "All Hail the Queen" ( not shown), and Wallis the color which was used on this seasons Betsey Johnson Runway. Enjoy....and envy! :)

So happy she remembered the blog from our interview in 2009, and noticed my haircut LOVE IT!

BASF Beauty Week: Fall 2011 Cosmetics Trend Show- Clinque

Clinque is a staple department store brand, that's by passed the frills of some of the newer brands. Sometimes sticking with what people are familiar with is the best thing a brand can do, the Clinque artist still wear the recognizable white lab coat with the silver "C" brooch. Clinque is also a brand that's close to my heart, the first cosmetic item I ever bought in the department store was from them. While they've added color lines the foundation of the brand is skincare and new and very popular item is "Even Better" Clinical Dark Spot Corrector.

Even Better is one of the top items I've added to my beauty list because dark spot are my skins trouble area, and it seems like no matter what product I've used I can't keep them at bay. Even Better is comparable to the harsher medical brands which can leave your skin dry and flaky. Clinque also has made this product so that it's appropriate for all skin tones, and address not only dark spots from acne but also age spots. Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, my favorite Bobbi Brown Item

I have to say the Bobbi Brown presentation was minimal but very impactful, which is synoomous with the estetic of the brand. The presenter, Faith a long time Bobbi Brown makeup artist enbodied that idea by coming to the stage with no product, emphasizing that the Bobbi Brown brand is not just in one single bottle, but many and not everyone is right for everybody. Faith also encouraged a proper color consultation to match the right foundation/concealer colors and also formulations (creme vs. liquid etc).

Faith wowed us with a pair of beautiful Gucci shoes, that added just a touch of glamour much like the wonderful shadows, blushes, and lip colors of the Bobbi Brown Brand. I was lucky enough to get video of Faith and the Bobbi Brown presentation which I hope wows you too.

BASF Beauty Week: Fall 2011 Cosmetics Trend Show- Clarins

Clarins is not a new, but a tried and true brand that has gotten some of the best reviews. This however is my first time featuring the brand on the blog. The Clarins presentation was compelling, and honestly down right funny at points so it's with great regret that I don't have video for you. I do have some information on the key product that was highlighted during the presentation. Clarins did something truly unique and honed in to the 40+ skin care fans with it's Vital Light Serum. Vital Light Serum reduces dark sport, lines/wrinkles, and restores skins luminosity creating the look of younger looking skin for both men and women. Vital Light Serum via testing on women 50+ showed improvement the three key areas in as little as two weeks. I can't wait to bring you more of other products from the Clarins brand.

BASF Beauty Week: Fall 2011 Cosmetics Trend Show- butter London

I'll start off this second edition of BASF beauty week with a brand many of you who read my blog know well, butter London. My butter London experience actually started before the Trend Show, I was going up the escalator when I was a women with a great hair cut and wonderful salt and pepper color hair. I had to give her a compliment, and we began discussing hair color. It was only right after we stopped talking that I realized I was face to face with butter London founder Nonie Creme. I reintroduced myself, and she let me know that she remembered my blog, she was also kind enough to give me a free lacquer.

Enough about my super fan experience, there will be more about that in another post. butter London is a new brand to Nordstrom, but not necessarily a new brand to those of use in attendance. Every person there was just excited as I was to see what butter London would be bringing to Nordstrom, and San Francisco. We weren't disappointed, there was a focus on bringing the luxury from the New York, Paris, and London runways to your home via butter London lacquer on your nails. Of course there were some great sets, like the Tops and Tails' Nail set which is the foundation to all butter London lacquers. And to top all of it off there was a gift with purchase, each person received a full sized lacquer in "Knees Up" a frosty, shimmery red which will be perfect for the holidays.
